Your Amazon Main Image Might Be Failing on Mobile Thumbnails
The number that looks wrong
Elena has looked at her main image roughly a hundred times, always the same way: full size, on her 27-inch monitor, held up next to two competitor thumbnails she pulled up in another tab. Every time, hers looks better. Sharper fabric texture, better color balance, a genuinely nice photo.
Her CTR disagrees. It's been stuck under 0.4% for a baby carrier that, by every other listing signal, should be pulling harder. So when her coach asks a simple question - "what size are you actually looking at this at" - the honest answer is: much bigger than any real shopper ever will.
Why the usual fixes fail
Most main-image work happens at full resolution, because that's the size available in Seller Central's image manager and the size a designer naturally works at. The problem is that almost nobody buying a baby carrier is scanning a search grid on a desktop monitor. They're scrolling one-handed on a phone, where that same image renders at something close to 300 pixels wide - a thumbnail small enough that fine texture, subtle color contrast, and delicate typography simply disappear.
An image that reads beautifully at full size can turn to visual mush at the size that actually matters. Elena wasn't testing a bad photo. She was evaluating a good photo at the wrong size and concluding it was fine.
This is easy to miss because nothing in the standard listing workflow forces the mobile-size check. Seller Central shows the full image in the listing editor. Review tools and rank trackers show competitor thumbnails at whatever size the browser window happens to render. Unless someone deliberately shrinks the comparison down to roughly 300 pixels wide - the actual rendered width in a phone search grid - the gap between "looks good" and "reads clearly at real size" stays invisible indefinitely.
The diagnosis lens
This is a design-for-render-size problem before it's anything else. The IDEA pillars, the decision triggers, the positioning - none of it matters if the visual cue carrying the message can't survive being shrunk to thumbnail scale. A weak signal at full size is invisible at 300 pixels; a signal that only worked because of fine detail is gone at 300 pixels.
The fix has to be evaluated at the size shoppers actually see, which means the design work and the testing work both need to start from mobile thumbnail scale, not desktop scale. That's a genuinely different design brief than "make it look nicer" - it means treating thumbnail legibility as the primary constraint and full-size polish as secondary. A gorgeous full-size image that fails the thumbnail test is a worse listing image than a plainer one that survives being shrunk.
The working session
The coach ran generate_main_image_title_plan against Elena's listing with the redesign built around the smallest real render size rather than the full-resolution version. The plan called for higher contrast between the carrier and the background, a simplified color story (the current image used two similar mid-tones that merged into one blob at thumbnail size), and a bolder framing of the one visual cue that actually needs to survive shrinking - the carrier's ergonomic seat position, the detail new parents scan for specifically.
What the coach said: "At full size, subtlety reads as quality. At 300 pixels, subtlety reads as nothing. Everything in this image has to survive being small before it gets to be pretty."
Rather than simply swapping the new image in and hoping, the coach then used design_test to structure a real split test instead of a gut call - a defined hypothesis (the redesigned image lifts mobile CTR specifically), a fixed sample size before calling a result, and both versions live long enough to clear normal daily variance.
What the coach said, setting up the test: "Don't decide by looking at both images side by side on your monitor and picking the one you like. That's the same mistake that got you here. Let the test run at real size, on real phones, and read the number."
What to measure
The critical discipline here is measuring mobile CTR specifically, not blended CTR across all devices. A baby-carrier audience skews heavily toward phone browsing; if desktop traffic is a small share of total impressions, a real mobile-CTR lift can get diluted into invisibility inside a blended number. Pull the device breakdown before declaring a winner - the test can genuinely work on the device that matters and still look flat in an unsegmented report.
The next action
Before you approve your next main image, look at it the way a shopper will: pull it up on your own phone, shrink the window, squint. If the detail you're proud of disappears, so will the shoppers who needed to see it.
