Why Your Amazon Bullets Are Failing on Your Shopify Page
The number that doesn't add up
Marcus sells an insulated water bottle. On Amazon, CVR sits around 11% — solid for the category. On Shopify, running the exact same bullets, same product, same price, CVR sits under 2%. Same bottle. Same copy. A fifth of the conversion rate.
He assumed it was a traffic-quality problem — Shopify traffic is colder, it's coming from Meta ads and Instagram, it hasn't already decided to buy the way Amazon search traffic has. That's partly true. It's also not the actual gap.
Why "it's just colder traffic" doesn't fix it
The instinct is to write it off as a funnel-stage difference and pour more budget into retargeting to warm the traffic up before it lands on the page. Marcus tried that. CVR ticked up slightly, then flattened. The traffic got warmer. The page still didn't answer what that traffic needed answered.
The real issue is that his Shopify PDP is word-for-word his Amazon listing copy — same bullets, same order, same claims. That copy was written to win inside Amazon's ecosystem, where Amazon itself does enormous invisible trust work: buyer protection, familiar checkout, reviews right there, a platform the shopper already trusts before they ever land on the listing. Off-Amazon, none of that ambient trust exists. The PDP is the only thing standing between a stranger and their credit card, and it's carrying none of the questions that stranger actually has.
The diagnosis lens: same product, different objections
This is a funnel-position problem, not a copy-quality problem. amazon_listing_copy and shopify_pdp are different positions in the funnel taxonomy for a reason — they solve for different buyers at different levels of platform-conferred trust, even when the product and price are identical. A bullet point that assumes Amazon's trust infrastructure is present will silently skip every objection that infrastructure used to cover.
The question isn't "is this good copy." It's "does this copy answer what this specific traffic, landing here from this specific source, needs answered before they'll hand a card number to a brand they've never heard of."
The working session
Marcus brought the coach both pages side by side and one question: why is the exact same copy performing so differently.
The coach ran audit_asset against the Shopify PDP, checked against the customer avatar built from his actual buyer data — not the Amazon buyer in the abstract, but specifically the cold-traffic buyer arriving from paid social and organic Instagram.
What the coach said: "Your bullets answer 'does this bottle keep ice for 24 hours.' Nobody arriving from an Instagram ad is worried about that yet — they're worried about whether this is a real company, what happens if it breaks, and whether shipping is going to cost more than the bottle. Your page never gets to any of that. Amazon was answering it for you without you noticing."
The audit flagged three specific gaps: no visible return policy above the fold, no shipping-cost transparency before checkout, and nothing establishing the company was real and reachable — no founder mention, no third-party coverage, nothing a skeptical stranger could hold onto. None of those gaps mattered on Amazon, where Prime, the A-to-z Guarantee, and Amazon's own reputation quietly covered for them. Off-platform, they were the whole story.
Rebuilding for the traffic that's actually arriving
The fix wasn't a rewrite of the product bullets — those claims were fine and stayed largely intact. It was adding what Amazon had been supplying for free: a visible, specific return policy near the add-to-cart button, shipping cost and timeline stated plainly instead of surfaced at checkout, and a short, real note about who's behind the brand. The product story didn't change. The trust infrastructure that Amazon quietly provides had to get built by hand.
This same platform-blindness shows up anywhere a founder assumes what worked in one context travels intact to another. A founder convinced a better-built product should be winning had the same kind of surprise waiting in a competitor's actual listing copy — the gap isn't always about your own page; sometimes it's about what a rival is quietly doing that you aren't. The same objection-blindness shows up in a jewelry brand's Brand Story that never once mentioned the top fear its hypoallergenic buyers actually had, and in a skincare founder blaming price when the real gap was a Brand Story with zero founder specificity — different funnel positions, same root cause: copy that assumes context the current reader doesn't have. And a hammock listing that lists every spec with no reason to buy today is the same "copy answers the wrong question" problem showing up as missing urgency instead of missing trust.

What to measure after
Segment Shopify CVR by traffic source specifically — paid social, organic, and direct or repeat traffic should be tracked separately, since a fix aimed at cold-traffic objections will move cold-traffic CVR first, and direct traffic may not budge at all. Give it three to four weeks to account for normal week-to-week noise in a smaller traffic pool than Amazon's. If cold-traffic CVR closes even part of the gap to Amazon's rate, the objection-coverage fix is working. If it doesn't move, run audit_asset again against the checkout flow itself — the gap may have moved one step further down the funnel.

Pull up your Shopify PDP on its own, with no Amazon tab open next to it, and read it as a total stranger who has never heard of your brand. Write down every question you'd have before typing in a card number. If your page doesn't answer at least three of them, that's your starting list.
