Stop Asking for Reviews Before Your Product Proves Itself
The morning number that shouldn't be a problem
Dana sells a soft-structured baby carrier, and every morning she checks the same thing: new reviews. They come in steadily. They're mostly fine — three and four stars, occasionally five. But when she actually reads them, almost every single one mentions the box, the packaging, how quickly it shipped. Almost none mention what the carrier is actually for: a parent's back not hurting two weeks into daily wear, a baby who settles instead of fussing against the fabric.
That's the number underneath the number. The review count looks healthy. The review content is describing an unboxing experience, not a product that's been living through the thing it was bought to solve. Something is happening between "customer received the product" and "customer wrote a review," and it isn't giving the product time to prove itself before asking what they thought of it.
Why "just automate the review email" keeps failing
Most review-request setups get built once and never questioned again: an email fires three days after delivery, asks for a review, done. It feels complete because a touchpoint exists. But "a touchpoint exists" and "the touchpoint fires at the right moment" are different claims, and only the second one determines what the review actually says.
Three days after a baby carrier arrives, a parent has unboxed it, maybe tried it on around the living room. They have not worn it on a real errand, dealt with a fussy baby in it, or found out whether their back holds up after repeated use. Asking at day three doesn't get a bad review — it gets a review about the box, because the box is the only part of the experience that's finished. The email isn't broken. It's just aimed at the wrong moment in the customer's actual relationship with the product.
The diagnosis lens: the job, not the shipping clock
This is a timing problem, and the fix starts with knowing when the customer's real job actually gets done — not when the carrier shows up. What the coach said: "Your email fires on a shipping event — day three after delivery. But the thing this parent is actually deciding whether to recommend hasn't happened yet at day three. They haven't wondered whether their back's going to hurt on a longer outing, or whether the baby's going to settle into it the fifth time instead of just the first. You're asking for the review before the product has had a chance to do its actual job."
Running run_funnel_audit against the review_request_flow touchpoint confirmed it: the request was scheduled entirely off a logistics event (delivery confirmation) rather than a usage milestone. Nothing was wrong with the copy. The clock itself was set to the wrong starting line.
The fix was retiming the ask — moving it from a fixed day-three shipping trigger to roughly the two-week mark the job map identified, with a light copy nudge that names the actual moment ("now that you've had a couple of weeks with it...") instead of assuming day three is universally "enough time" for every product category.
What to measure after
This one takes patience — you're deliberately delaying the ask, so expect a short-term dip in raw review volume before the composition improves. Watch the content of new reviews over the following six to eight weeks: are they mentioning back comfort and how the baby settles, instead of the box. If that shift shows up, the timing fix worked even if total review count temporarily dips. If reviews are still packaging-focused at the new interval, the job-completion window itself may need re-mapping — the two-week estimate was a hypothesis, not a certainty.
